In the Intermediate Phase, our focus is on developing strong academic foundations, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and intellectual curiosity. Through an inquiry-based approach, learners are encouraged to explore mathematical concepts, ask meaningful questions, make connections and apply their learning to real-world contexts.
The Intermediate Phase Mathematics Teacher will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality, engaging Mathematics lessons that develop conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning and confidence.
The successful candidate will have a passion for Mathematics and the ability to make mathematical concepts accessible, relevant and exciting for learners. They will use a variety of teaching strategies to accommodate different learning needs and will foster a classroom culture in which learners are encouraged to think mathematically, make mistakes, persevere and solve problems creatively.
The role requires a teacher who is committed to academic excellence, innovative teaching practices and the Christ-centred ethos of Maragon Olympus.
Intermediate Phase Mathematics Teachers are expected:
To plan and deliver engaging, challenging and differentiated Mathematics lessons aligned with the CAPS curriculum.
To develop learners' conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
To strengthen foundational mathematical skills including number sense, mental mathematics, operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, geometry, patterns, data handling and financial literacy.
To use an inquiry-based approach that encourages learners to investigate, question, reason and communicate mathematical thinking.
To incorporate real-world applications of Mathematics to demonstrate the relevance and value of mathematical concepts.
To use a variety of teaching methodologies, manipulatives, visual representations and practical activities to support different learning styles.
To integrate digital tools and educational technology meaningfully into Mathematics teaching and learning.
To identify learning gaps and provide appropriate intervention, support and extension to meet individual learner needs.
To create a classroom environment where learners develop confidence, perseverance and a positive attitude towards Mathematics.
To promote mathematical communication, encouraging learners to explain their thinking and justify their solutions.
To demonstrate strength of character, integrity, professionalism and enthusiasm in all aspects of the role.
To develop positive partnerships with parents, colleagues and the wider school community.
To communicate and collaborate with all stakeholders in a positive, respectful and solution-focused manner.
Academic Delivery
Planning and implementing a rigorous and engaging Mathematics programme that develops conceptual understanding, mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Assessment & Reporting
Designing and implementing meaningful formative and summative assessments, analysing learner performance, providing constructive feedback and maintaining accurate assessment records.
Intervention & Extension
Identifying learners who require additional support or academic extension and implementing appropriate strategies to ensure that every learner is appropriately challenged and supported.
Classroom & Behaviour Management
Creating a structured, positive and motivating learning environment where discipline is rooted in respect, responsibility and mutual dignity.
Parent Partnership
Communicating effectively with parents regarding learner progress, achievements and areas requiring additional support, while building constructive and professional relationships.
School Brand Ambassadorship
Representing Maragon Olympus with pride and consistently modelling the school's Christian ethos, values and commitment to excellence.
Administration
Maintaining accurate lesson planning, assessment records, learner information and other administrative requirements within the prescribed timelines.
Health & Safety
Prioritising the safety and well-being of all learners and adhering to school health and safety procedures.
A B.Ed Intermediate Phase degree with a specialisation in Mathematics OR a relevant degree with a PGCE.
SACE registration and valid Police Clearance (non-negotiable).
2–5 years teaching experience, preferably within Intermediate Phase Mathematics.
Strong knowledge and understanding of the CAPS Mathematics curriculum.
Demonstrated understanding of conceptual Mathematics, number sense and problem-solving methodologies.
Experience with inquiry-based learning would be advantageous.
Strong computer and digital literacy, with the ability to integrate technology effectively into Mathematics teaching.
Experience with educational technology and/or digital Mathematics platforms would be advantageous.
Valid First Aid certification (advantageous).
