To effectively manage and lead the Fresh departments within the store, ensuring operational excellence, exceptional customer service, product availability, food safety, quality, merchandising and financial performance.
The Local Floor Manager – Fresh is accountable for driving Fresh department performance through effective people leadership, stock management, operational execution and adherence to Pick n Pay standards, policies and procedures.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric.
- Relevant retail, business management or operations qualification will be advantageous.
- Minimum 3–5 years' retail experience, preferably within a Fresh/FMCG environment.
- Previous supervisory or management experience within a supermarket or retail environment.
- Experience managing teams and delivering against operational and financial targets.
Advantageous Experience
- Experience in Fresh departments such as:
- Produce
- Bakery
- Deli
- Butchery
- Seafood
- Prepared Foods
- Experience in a high-volume supermarket environment.
- Experience managing food safety and quality standards.
- Experience with stock management, shrinkage and waste reduction.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
2.1 Fresh Department Operations
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Fresh departments, ensuring smooth and efficient execution.
- Ensure departments are adequately staffed and operationally ready to serve customers.
- Drive high standards of product availability, freshness, quality and presentation.
- Ensure effective implementation of promotional activity, pricing and merchandising standards.
- Monitor sales, waste, markdowns, stock levels and other relevant Fresh KPIs.
- Identify opportunities to improve sales, profitability and operational efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures and operating standards.
- Maintain a clean, safe and well-organised working environment.
2.2 Customer Service
- Create a customer-focused environment across all Fresh departments.
- Ensure customers receive friendly, efficient and knowledgeable service.
- Resolve customer queries and complaints promptly and professionally.
- Monitor customer feedback and implement corrective actions where required.
- Ensure Fresh departments consistently meet expected customer experience standards.
2.3 People Management & Leadership
- Lead, coach and develop Fresh department teams to achieve operational and commercial objectives.
- Ensure employees understand their roles, responsibilities and performance expectations.
- Conduct regular performance discussions and provide constructive feedback.
- Identify training and development needs and support employee growth.
- Manage attendance, productivity, discipline and employee relations in line with company policies.
- Build a positive, accountable and high-performing team culture.
- Ensure effective succession planning and development of potential talent.
2.4 Stock & Inventory Management
- Ensure accurate stock management across Fresh departments.
- Monitor stock levels and ensure appropriate replenishment.
- Minimise waste, shrinkage, damages and stock losses.
- Ensure correct receiving, storage, handling and rotation of Fresh products.
- Drive adherence to FIFO/FEFO principles where applicable.
- Investigate stock variances and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure stock counts and inventory processes are completed accurately and on time.
2.5 Food Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable food safety, hygiene and quality standards.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene within Fresh departments.
- Ensure correct product storage temperatures and handling procedures.
- Conduct and follow up on relevant food safety and quality checks.
- Ensure corrective actions from audits and inspections are implemented.
- Escalate any food safety, quality or compliance risks immediately.
2.6 Financial & Commercial Management
- Drive achievement of sales and gross profit targets within Fresh.
- Monitor department performance against agreed budgets and targets.
- Manage controllable costs and optimise labour utilisation.
- Control waste, markdowns and stock losses.
- Analyse Fresh performance reports and identify areas requiring improvement.
- Implement action plans to address underperformance.
2.7 Merchandising & Execution
- Ensure Fresh departments are consistently merchandised according to Pick n Pay standards.
- Maintain attractive, well-stocked and customer-friendly displays.
- Ensure promotional displays and campaigns are implemented correctly and on time.
- Monitor pricing accuracy and product information.
- Ensure availability of key lines and promotional products.
2.8 Health & Safety
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety requirements.
- Identify and address potential workplace hazards.
- Ensure employees follow safe working practices and procedures.
- Report and escalate incidents, hazards and safety concerns.
- Maintain appropriate housekeeping standards throughout the Fresh areas.
